What passes for crime amongst the Nuem is often questionable to say the least and certain elements of the ruling elite have developed their own personal ideals that they insist those who rank beneath them must adhere to if they wish to retain their status within society. Often these high ranking individuals will also develop their own unique correctional methods that are designed to extinguish any spark of criminality that might be found amongst their subjects should they grow weary and disobedient. Of these punishments the most common method used to ensure compliance is to forcibly strip the criminals from their pain suits and deprive them of the divine pleasures that are offered within the sanctity of the cold metal.
This is the fate of the Paenitentiam, they are criminals who have been cast out and stripped from their suits so that they might repent and atone for their sins upon the field of battle. Only through war can they can prove themselves worthy enough to deserve the comforting warmth of their pain suits once again and they fight fiercely to regain that privilege.
