Sediment Mining Vessel
Hard worker: Equipped with a heavy-duty drill and front-mounted mining array, this vessel doesn’t just extract minerals, it carves deep trenches into asteroid surfaces and space debris, kicking up clouds of pulverised rock and metallic sediment. A network of sediment filters and gravity sifting tanks separates valuable ore from dust before storing the processed materials in its cargo bays.
Whose next?: Prominently displayed on the ship’s exterior, the countdown display isn’t a warning, it’s a fact. The contract will expire, and if it doesn’t get topped up, the vessel moves on to whatever comes next. Passed from one mining company to the next, these hand me down workhorses run until their rental contracts dry up. Refurbished just enough to stay functional, they degrade with every transfer, patched, battered, barely space worthy, considered scrap with engines. Upper management doesn’t care about the ship, only the ore it pulls in before time runs out. The crew works under relentless pressure, knowing there’s no guarantee of renewal. When the timer hits zero, it’s out of their hands. Either the contract gets extended, or the ship moves on.
Life on board: Despite its size, the colossal vessel remains a world of tight corridors for its 190 crew members. Dust and grime clings to every surface, settling in forgotten corners and coating equipment in a fine greasy layer. Minimal comforts, constant maintenance, and the daily expectation that something will break.
